David Young Wins 3rd District Race for Congress
Republican David Young, a disciple of U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley who returned to Iowa last year after two decades in Washington, defeated Democrat Staci Appel on Tuesday in the state’s 3rd District race for Congress. Young, 46, a Van Meter native, captured 52.8 percent of the vote in unofficial results, besting Appel by more than 10 percentage points. He will succeed U.S. Rep. Tom Latham, R-Clive, who didn’t seek re-election after 10 terms in the House of Representatives. The 3rd District covers 16 counties in southwest Iowa, extending from the Des Moines area to Council Bluffs. An elated Young, speaking to about 150 people at an American Legion post in his hometown, said Tuesday night he was humbled and he takes the responsibility of the office seriously. “This day’s not really about the election being over,” Young said. “It’s about the hard work we need to start tomorrow and I’m armed and ready to do that. This is a great district: very rural in some areas, very urban in others, as you know. I will leave no community untouched. I will listen to you and I will work hard in the halls of Congress for you.” Appel, in conceding the race, congratulated her supporters on running a great, tough campaign and thanked all of them. “While we were not successful today, we must continue to work toward a better, stronger future,” she said.
